'Green Magic Broccoli' Brassica oleracea var italica
1 GALLON 'GREEN MAGIC BROCCOLI'
Brassica oleracea var italica
USDA Zones 3-10
'Green Magic Broccoli' is an annual vegetable that is grown for harvest of large, tight, broccoli heads with green flower buds at the ends of the thick edible stems. It is best grown for a late spring harvest, as broccoli is regularly grown in cool temperatures of spring or fall. These plants usually grow poorly when daytime temperatures consistently exceed 80 degrees F, meaning it will not grow during southern summers. This time of year is perfect to start planting & with an already established, 1 gallon size plant it will be hardier & easier to produce your beautiful vegetable.
Medium; keep soil consistently moist, yet well drained
Well drained soil mix; can grow in neutral, slightly acidic, &/or slightly alkaline soil. Some prefer Loam.
Low maintenance -- just keep an eye out for pests, make sure your plant's are watered moderately, & harvest your vegetable at the correct time (more specific instructions for harvest below).
For SPRING harvest -- Plant your 'Green Magic' in the ground 3 weeks prior to the last spring frost date.
For FALL harvest -- Plant the broccoli once you've received the plant about 18" apart in rows that are 2-3' apart. Your plants will typically grow to be 24-30" tall with a beautiful head of broccoli in the center. Keep your plants consistently moist & apply mulch around plants to protect shallow roots, reduce weeds, & retain soil moisture.
**Rotate crops to avoid soil borne diseases.
Plant during the same seasons mentioned in the in-ground garden, but in a container. in our experience we have used 1 'Green Magic Broccoli' plant as the center piece of a 12" container with other vegetables/herbs around them ('Bull's Blood' beet, Red Sorrel 'Rumex,' Rainbow Chard, etc.). The plants mentioned previously in the same species of broccoli. You can also plant with other fall season annuals, edible or not, with similar sun & light patterns.
VEGETABLES THAT CAN BE GROWN UNDER SAME CONDITIONS
Broccoli is in the same species (Brassica oleracea) as a number of other cool season vegetables including kale, arugula, cress, collard greens, cabbage, Brussel croups, cauliflower, daikon, rapini, horseradish, radishes, maca, Napa cabbage, wasabi, watercress, rutabaga, & kohlrabi.
May-Nov. Harvest your broccoli as soon as the heads are firm & tight & before any of the buds begin to open. Cut the stems about 5-6" below the base of the head.
BEWARE OF INSECTS:
Much like growing any vegetable it is crucial you look out for pests & insects as they love eating vegetables & fruits as much as humans do! There are insects specific to leafy greens, including cabbageworms & cabbage loopers, as well as other types like real beetles, caterpillars, slugs, & aphids.
