Looking for a plant that looks like hair to fill the top of a face pot? Using Carex as a hair-resembling plant is one of our favorite ways to use this plant here at Horticult, aside from a trailing, spilling container border plant.
This ornamental grass grows 10" to 1' in height with a spread of 1-2', forming a densely tufted, spilling tussock of slender & irridescent variegated foliage that almost shimmers in slight breezes. When planting in the ground, space them 20" apart, as they will fill in any open area. Carex 'Evergold' thrives in full sun to partial shade with average water needs, ultimately requiring little maintenance. They thrive in moist, well drained soils such as those made up of chalk, clay, loam, or sand.
Garden uses include bed & borders, ground covers, patio plants & container arrangements in city & courtyard, gravel & rock garden, as well as informal, cottage, & modern garden styles.
As far as beneficial attributes include, the Carex 'Evergold' is an Award Winning Plant of Merit that is DEER RESISTANT & provides year round interest. It is generally disease free, while you want to watch for aphids.
Propagation is easily done by seed; sown in containers in a cold frame during spring or by division in early summer.
During the summer, you will want to cut out any dead leaves & cut back to the ground in the late winter.
