Horsetail Reed
1 GALLON HORSETAIL REED
Equisetum hyemale
USDA Zone 4-9
This evergreen perennial is an awesome accent to any water garden, while it will grow like a weed if it isn't controlled. It stands similar to bamboo with thin foliage that shoots straight up like a tall grass, growing 2-6 feet tall depending on conditions. Horsetail Reeds, also known as Scouring Rush or it's scientific name Equisetum hyemale, has an incredible history, dating back almost 350 million years ago.
Equisetum hyemale grows in wet conditions & can even grow in standing water. For this reason, it's usually used as a water garden accent plant, in swampy areas, & other extremely wet areas where most plant's aren't able to survive. As mentioned previously, the plant will spread extremely quickly. This is why we really love to use it in container gardens, along borders, & in large patio pots, similar to ornamental grasses.
When it comes to it's quickly spreading nature this is because of the reed's rhizomes, & could even be called invasive, yet it is native to North America, so it is merely a quickly spreading plant.
Because of this,
SUN
Full sun to part shade; extremely adaptable to various light levels
SOIL

WATER
Moisture level of soil must be at least moderately wet. It can grow in standing water up to ~4". At the same time, this plant is drought tolerant.
**This tolerance to very wet & dry conditions makes it perfect uncommonly suited rain gardens.
